The First Baptist Church of Grant, Alabama was founded on May 22, 1930 when eleven people under God’s leadership took the initiative to bind themselves together in a covenant relationship. Their desire was to be able to worship God, preach and teach the Word of God according to the deep conviction of the people known across the years as “Baptists”. The eleven people who made this commitment were H.L. Nipper, Mr. and Mrs. O.E. Lemley, Katherine Derrick, Mr. and Mrs. D.M. Segler, Lola Segler McDonald and Mrs. W.W. Ayers.
The real history of the church is told in the lives of dedication that these, and others who have joined them, have shown through the years. Our history tells of souls saved, lives changed and people ministered to in both spiritual and physical ways. |

There
was no church structure during the first ten years of this fellowship's
existence. The people met to worship in homes, the schoolhouse and
the little rock building which is now the front of McDonald's Building
Supply Store. Help was given by the Marshall Baptist Association
and the Home Mission Board to build a wood frame auditorium with
six classrooms in 1941. During this same year, a pastorium was completed.
The people planted a cotton patch that produced $250.00. This, along
with the money from the Home Mission Board, provided the money for
the first building and pastorium. Mrs. D.M. Segler gave an acre
of land for this. Solitude Church gave in the form of labor and
materials. The present concrete block building was finished in 1956.
Four years later the present auditorium was constructed and the
old church building removed. Another acre of land was purchased
in 1969 and the present pastorium built. The present educational
building was started in May 1974, and the first service was held
in it on November 20, 1974. It was dedicated on January 5, 1975.
An extensive redecorating took place and a dedication service was
held February 15, 1987. |
